Tribute to Pete Hamill

Pete Hamill

It is a most sad day in New York today. Those New Yorkers with the good sense and capacity to know who this great man was, one of The Great New Yorkers of all times. Hamill passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2020, and New York and The World has just become a much less interesting place,” without Pete in it. Hamill may very well be the “Last of The Great Celebrity Newspaperman.”  Hamill wrote 10 novels and a couple collections of short stories, and he was a top author, he will most be remembered as a Newspaper Reporter. This he would tell you himself. His style was muscular, sometimes gritty, and always of energetic prose.

Over his career Hamill worked (wrote) for The New York Post, New York Herald Tribune, The Daily News, Village Voice, and New York Magazine. He penned numerous articles for Esquire, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and other magazines. Hamill was at his best telling the story of his beloved city New York. He could seamlessly write great articles on crime scenes, crime, courthouse drama, of New York and the Worlds Power Brokers, and just about anything. He was a natural storyteller, and with so much knowledge with an encyclopedic take of New York, in his later years Hamill was often featured as a speaker in television documentaries the great metropolis, its history, places, events, and characters, The Heartbeat of New York. We all know him for his books and thousands of magazine and newspaper articles, but if you have never seen Pete Hamill talk about New York, people, anything, do yourself a favor and seek these documentaries out. He had a wonderful voice, and he could besides penning a story, Hamill was great at telling (vocally) as well.

Yes we have lost another great one in Pete. I know it sounds cliche “we’ve lost another great,” yes it may sound cliche, but it is as true as can be. When I look around, at such things as books, writings, music, entertainment, and the horrible crap they’ve (so-called musicians) been putting out the past 20 years or so, and the people we’ve lost over the years; Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., John Lennon, Dean Martin, Jimmy Breslin, and now Pete Hamill, the World is so less interesting. Sorry, but there just will never ever be any other entertainer like the great Frank Sinatra, there can’t be, current generations just don’t have the style or class to appreciate this type of greatness. If you have an entire generation listening to shitty crap rap music, and the so-called alternative rock, it proves right there that these people are completely devoid of good-taste. It so so sad, when we had all that great music (R&B, Pop, Standards, Rock n’ Roll) in the 1960s and 70s, that there is so much crap out there today, and practically all the so-called music is so horrible (other than a very few exceptions), “I just don’t get it?” Thank God for books, and Thank God for recordings so we don’t have to listen to all the Shitty Music (except when your in retail shops) that’s out there today, we can listen to the great stuff of the 1960s, 50s, and 70s, and not have to listen the shit they make today (Kanye, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, etc.), yes Thank God for recordings of the past. I feel sorry for the kids of today. We have R&B, Rock n’ Roll, Dean Martin, and Sinatra, and we always have Pete. This great man has passed away, we are thankful that we had him (for 85 years). Pete Hamill has passed away, a very sad day, but his words and his legacy live on, “read him.”

God Bless you Peter Hamill, and thank you for all you gave us. Rest in Peace, you live on in your written word.

The Perfect Barolo

Luigi Einaudi  BAROLO “CANUBI” 2015

“This was my Pick for TOP WINE of The Entire Show”

TRE BICCHIERI NEW YORK

February 28, 2020

Yes the Barolo Canubi 2015 produced by the wine estate of Luigi Einaudi absolutely blew me away. It was absolutely incredible, and what I would describe as the perfect Barolo. “Yes it was.” Still is. Wow, I couldn’t believe it, right out of the gate, the first wine of the day as I sauntered into the Metropolitan Pavilion on 18th Street. The doors weren’t open yet, but I wrangled by way in for some early tasting before the crowds  came.  I have for the past 12 years or so gone in one hour before the trade, as as a journalist they let you in an hour before everyone else, but this year they change their policy. The lady at the registration desk asked me if I wanted to go to The Master Class Seminar which was starting at 1:30, it was now 1:15 and the doors officially weren’t opening until 2 o’clock, 45 minutes away. “I wanted in now,” so I told, yes, I wanted to go to the seminar, and I did, but changed my mind once I went in and started tasting some lovely Italian Wine. Oh they were great this year, much better than the few years past. I absolutely adored some of the wines I tasted today (yesterday), starting with “The Most Perfect Barolo of All,” the Luigi Einaudi BAROLO “CANUBI” 2015 … Yes it was that good, and yes it was perfect. The wine, everything was in perfect balance: the fruit, the tannins, acidity, the weight, it was “The Perfect Barolo” and one I’ll never forget. Barolo’s just do not get any better than the one I had yesterday at tre Bicchieri New York 2020, I was literally in 7th Heaven.

Over the years I have been quite fortunate to have drinking numerous vintage of Cannubi Barolo from all of the wine producers who make Barolo Cannubi from vineyard plots that they own on this one of the Barolo regions most famous hills. I have for some time loved Barolo from the 1996 vintage which is my own personal favorite Barolo vintage of them all, even more so than the more highly acclaimed 2000 and 2001 Vintages of Barolo. I have tasted my friend Alberto Chiarlo’s Michele Chiarlo Barolo Canubi of several vintages as well as those of Paolo Scavino, Marchesi di Barolo (my 1st ever Cannubi tasted), Francesco Rinaldi 96 (Awesome!) and more. And now after drinking this wonderful Einaudi Barolo Cannubie 2015 it easily ranks up there with the best Barolo Cannubi I’ve ever tasted, and may very well be my favorite one of all. It certainly was my favorite wine of all those I tasted at Tre Bicchieri 2020, and as of those that I didn’t get around to tasting, and there’s no one person who could taste every wine at the show, I’m very sure that even if I did taste every single wine there, there is not a one that could possibly be better, “I’m sure this was the Best!”

Basta !

Yes It’s TRE BICCHIERI DAY in NEW YORK  2020

TRE BICCHIERI

The great Tre Bicchieri Italian Wine Tasting returns to New York today. For the Italian Wine World of New York (Me & ?) this is our biggest day of the year. I will see many of my old friends who make wine in Italy, as well as catching up with pals from New York who deal and love Italian Wine as well. Tre Bicchieri New York is a Grand Tasting of Italian Wines as presented by Gambero Rosso and their Tre Bicchieri Italian Wine Guide named Vini d’ Italia (Wines of Italy) which is considered The Italian Wine Bible of the mother country of these great wines, Italy.

Gambero Rosso literally translates to Red Prawn (Shrimp) and the publishing house by the same name prints books and magazines dedicated to Italian Food & Wine. For Americans, a good analogy of what Gambero Rosso magazine is, that it is more or less like a combination of The Wine Spectator & Gourmet Magazine all put together into one magazine. Gambero Rosso does not publish a magazine solely dedicated to wine, but its contents and subject matter are of Italian Wine and food, and a bit of travel thrown in as well, as it all ties together.

The Gamebero Rosso Italian Wine Guide “Vini d’Italia” is a guide to Italy’s top wines. Gambero Rosso awards Three Glasses (Tre Bicchieri) to what they consider to be the best wines in Italy. They award one and two glasses as well The Tre Bicchieri Wine Tastings Tour brings the top 200 Tre Bicchieri Wines to cities aroudn the World for these grand tastings. The cities include in the Tre Bicchieri Tour are: Piemonte (Alba) , Tuscany New York, London, Chicago, Alto Adige, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Yes today I will see some good friends who I’ve not seen for some time. I will taste wonderful Italian Wines, including; Barolo Barbaresco, Brunello, Chianti, Amarone, Aglianico, and more. I love tasting the wines, but for me Tre Bicchieri is seeing my friends, chit-chatting and sipping the wine, but it all about the socializing. This is what I cherish most about the event, being with and seeing my friends. All surrounded by Italy’s Greatest Wine.

“BABY IT’S YOU”

SMITH

Baby It’s You” is a song written by Burt Bacharach (music), Luther Dixon (credited as Barney Williams), and Mack David (lyrics). It was recorded by the Shirelles and the Beatles, and became hits for both. The highest-charting version of “Baby It’s You” was by the band Smith, who took the song to number five on the US charts in 1969.

The SHIRELLES Original Version

The song was produced by Luther Dixon. When released as a single in 1961, the song became very popular, becoming a Top 10 smash on the Pop and R&B Charts, reaching number three on the R&B chart and peaking at number eight on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.[3] It later appeared on the album Baby It’s You, named to capitalize upon the success of the single. The vocal arrangements on this version proved influential in subsequent versions, including that by the Beatles, who used the same one. One notable feature of the song is its minor-to-major key chord changes on the verses.

The BEATLES

English rock group the Beatles performed “Baby It’s You” as part of their stage act from 1961 until 1963, and recorded it on February 11, 1963 for their first album, Please Please Me, along with “Boys”, another song by the Shirelles. American label Vee-Jay Records included it on Introducing… The Beatles and Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles. Capitol included it on The Early Beatles. The Beatles’ version differs to the Shirelles’ by repeating the second verse instead of the first.
A live version was released on Live at the BBC in 1994. On this version, Lennon does not repeat part of the second verse after the solo (as he did on the studio version), but repeats part of the first verse, which is the way the Shirelles sang the song. The song was issued as a CD single and a vinyl single in 1995 in both the UK and the US, the Beatles’ first in nearly a decade. Both versions have four tracks, making it an EP instead of a regular issue single. The three additional tracks, while from BBC recordings, did not appear on Live at the BBC. Tracks 2 and 4 were later included on On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2, but this recording of track 3 remains unique to this release. The single reached number seven in the UK and number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Remembering John Lennon

John Lennon

In his Icon New York City T-Shirt

Former Beatle John Lennon loved New York, So much so that he made it his home. Moving into the famed Dakota apartment building on West 72nd Street in New York. He moved in  with his wife Yoko Ono in 1971. Yoko gave birth to their son Sean Ono Lennon on John’s birth date on October 9, 1975. Yes John Lennon and his son shared the same birth date of October 9th.

Tragically John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in front of his beloved New York home (The Dakota) at 5 PM on December 8th 1980. Naturally most of the World mourned the loss of the former Beatle John Lennon’s. I can remember the time very well. I was still living in New Jersey and in college at New York Technical College in Brooklyn. It was a Monday Night, and the height of Monday Night Football. I was watching the football game and having a couple drinks with my friends at the VFW in Carlstadt, NJ. I left before the end of the game, got into my car and was driving home to Summit Street. I had just pulled out of the parking lot and had only driven one block when I heard the tragic news on my car radio, when it broadcast a Monday Night Football over the radio and Howard Cossell announced that, “An unspeakable tragedy, confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City. John Lennon, outside his of his apartment building on the West Side of  New York City. The most famous perhaps of all of The Beatles, shot twice in the back. Rushed to Roosevelt Hospital. Dead on Arrival. Hard to go back to the game, after that news flash, which in duty we had to report.”

Cossell : “In case the folks missed the earlier news flash, ABC New has confirmed that John Lennon, a member of the famed Beatles. Maybe the best known member, was shot twice in the back, outside his apartment building on the West Side of New York tonight. Rushed to the New York Roosevelt Hospital, Dead on Arrival. An unspeakable tragedy. Details on Nightline, 30 minutes after this contest.”

I could hardly believe my ears. I was shocked. I continued to drive home. Parked my car and ran upstairs to my apartment. I immediately got on the phone and called my brother Jimmy, and told him the sad news. We were big fans of The Beatles and especially of John. A senseless, stupid act by a moronic idiot Mark David Chapman. Why? Just to gain some notoriety? “What a No Good Moronic Bastard,” is all I can say. And I must say it.

I went to school the next day. Classes at New York Technical College on Jay Street Brooklyn. As I’ve said, I was still living in New Jersey, and I got on the # 35 Bus to take me to the Porth Authority Bus Terminal, where I went donwstairs and into the New York City Subway System to catch the A Train to Jay Street / Borough Hall, Brooklyn to get to school, 3 blocks away. I attened my classes, then got on another A Train out of Brooklyn to Manhattan, but I didn’t leave the subway system their. I got off the A Train at 42nd Street and waited on the platform for a C Train to arrive on the local track. One came a few minutes later, and I hopped on to take to West 72nd Street where I got out. I got off the C Train and walked up the stairs and on to West 72nd Street, but not before emerging from the station, I could already hear the sound of people singing one of John’s famous songs, “Give Peace a Chance.”

When I walked up out of the subway and onto West 72nd Street, I saw a sea of humanity, hundreds of people out on the street in front of the Dakota where John Lennon had made his home with his wife Yoko and son Sean, and the day before he had been gunned down at the place where he lived in his beloved adopted city of New York.

The crowd started singing what had become John’s Anthem song “Imagine,” and I joined in, sing with a couple hundred people paying tribute to one of their heroes, the great John Lennon, who Imagined and just wanted the World to Give Peace a Chance. We salute you John, and your memory lives on, and we thank you for all you did. May you Rest in Peace Brother John.
